A List of Mental Health & Therapy Resources

Hey Everyone,

I hope you’re doing well today. As some of you guys may or may not know, mental health and wellness are two topics I’m passionate about. Particularly, mental health in Black and other POC communities. For me, education on the importance of practicing mental health wasn’t something I grew up with. It wasn’t until I entered my late 20s, that I decided to take the plunge and better my mental health through therapy. Since then, it’s become one of my most asked questions. How did I find my therapist? What resources do I use? How can I afford therapy sessions? The list goes on.

Below I gathered a list of resources for mental health assistance and therapy options. Some of these were recommended through close peers, therapists, and personal research. I tried to make the list as detailed as possible. There are so many organizations, websites, and tools out there to help you. All you have to do is ask for help. Please know that asking for help, is one of the most courageous things you can do. You’re not alone.

I hope this list helps get you started on your mental health journey. It’s incredible to see the way your life can and will change when you start prioritizing yourself.

  1. Sliding Scale Sessions -

While therapy sessions are quite expensive, I wanted to mention the option for sliding scale sessions. What exactly is that? A sliding scale is a type of fee structure therapists sometimes use to give people with fewer resources a lower fee. Many therapists offer the option by calculating what your session fee will be based on your expenses, dependents, and monthly income. This does get tricky with insurance, should you choose to have it covered by your insurance vs paying out of pocket. I encourage you to read more on sliding scales here. I personally pay out of pocket on a sliding scale base, so it is possible! You can also type in sliding scale therapy and your location to see what options are available to you. As well as asking a therapist you may be interested in if they offer a sliding scale. There’s no harm in asking.

  2. Therapy Apps - Being that we’re in a pandemic, the majority of therapists have switched their sessions to virtual ones via Zoom or Facetime. Additionally, there are a number of apps you can use to talk to someone and/or if you can’t afford individual sessions.
